News from the Nuclear War
A glaring omission in the campaign for 5th District U.S. Representative is any discussion of nuclear war. In the cluttered field clamoring for the defeat of Congressman Michael Baumgartner, there is no clear voice for peace, no criticism of U.S. violation of the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons, and no demand to protect our climate or Americans from the lavish and unstable arsenal of U.S. doomsday machinery.
Spokane Veterans For Peace #35 believes this silence is based upon the fear and ignorance of nuclear war promoted by war enthusiasts and profiteers to protect short-term profits and long-range political hegemony. SVFP and other local human rights groups continue the campaign to inform the public about nuclear war with Remembering Hiroshima: Empathy & Nuclear War on August 6, the 81st anniversary of the bombing of Hiroshima. Sean Chabot, Professor of Sociology at Eastern Washington University, will be keynote speaker at the Community Building, 35 W. Main. Doors open at 6:30 PM. The program begins at 7:00 PM. The public is welcome.
“We are fortunate to have Dr. Chabot with us at such an urgent time to know more about the historical and sociological impact of U.S. nuclear weapons,” says Rusty Nelson, President Emeritus of VFP Chapter #35. “Many peace activists are being marginalized in our efforts to end the threats of nuclear war and nuclear waste by the insurgence of corporate and fascist influences. Sean is well-informed and connected locally and globally to help us build solidarity, information, and empowerment.”
Commemoration of the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki has become a hallmark of Spokane resistance to nuclear war.
Endorsers of the Thursday event include: Pax Christi Spokane, Peace and Justice Action League, Dorothy Day Labor Forum, Unitarian Universalist Social Action Committee, St. John’s Cathedral, Democratic Socialists of America, Jewish Voice For Peace, NW Coalition for the Liberation of Palestine, NW Against Nuclear Weapons, WA Physicians for Social Responsibility, Spokane People’s Calendar, and Communist Party USA of Eastern Washington.
Service, on its surface, may seem a noble thing, but those who fight and kill and die rarely know just whom they serve, or how, or why.
Spokane Veterans For Peace Chapter 35 invites the community to join us for “Remembering Hiroshima: Empathy & Nuclear War,” an evening of remembrance, education, and conversation marking the anniversary of the bombing of Hiroshima.
The program features Sean Chabot, PhD, Professor of Sociology at Eastern Washington University, along with music by the Spokane Raging Grannies. Together, the evening will explore the human cost of nuclear war and the continuing importance of working for peace.
